RHODES
ISLAND GREECE
Rhodes Island
Rhodes is an
outstanding island in the East
of Mediterranean, the largest
one of Dodecanesus, an island
rich in its beauty and famous
for its history. The island is
quite a popular holiday
destination as it has one of the
best-preserved and the largest
European Medieval cities and has
warm weather for 300 days of the
year. Rhodes has been the cradle
of many civilizations; starting
with the knights of St. John in
the Middle Ages, then Ottomans
and Italians. Four large
historic towns still testify its
ancient glory with their ruins:
Ialysos, Camirus, Lindos, Rhodes
itself where buildings dating
back to the Byzantium and the
middle ages link that distant
age of prosperity in the life of
today. Philosophers,
mathematicians, athletes, poets
and sculptors, already
well-known in the age of Homer,
lived in this flowery island.
Some of the most admirable works
of art that matchless period,
you can see even today in the
very surroundings of their
creation. Thus, the island has a
unique historical harmony and
beauty. The main port of Rhodes
is Rhodes City which bears the
same name as the island. The
other very touristic areas of
Rhodes island are; Lindos and
Kamiros. This city, which is
still surrounded by a 12 meter
thick city-wall which gives you
the feeling of travelling back
to Medieval times especially
when you walk around its narrow,
stone-paved roads. After dinner,
we highly recommend you to enjoy
in Rhodes Town night out.
Rhodes, owing its name to the
rose, the sacred flower of
Apollo, the god of the sun,
appears in the tradition as the
nymph of this god. Quite flowery
under the bright blue sky, still
bathed by the same emerald sea,
it always looks like a nymph.
That ideal island successfully
combining the tradition with
beauty and always fascinating
with it's charms.
When visiting Rhodes you will
admire the major ancient
findings on Rhodes island, the
old town center, the castle and
the windmills of Rhodes. There
is so much to be seen on Rhodes
as it constituted a leading
force in the area for 140 years
(up to 79 A.D.) Rhodes was a
dominant and a major marine
force.Ferries connect the island's
commercial passenger port with
several nearby islands within
the Dodecanese Islands, as well
as with the Cycladic Islands,
the Greek mainland, and Bodrum
in Turkey. The city is also a
popular port of call for cruise
itineraries, especially in the
summer months. There are daily
fast catamarans from & to the
Greek island of Rhodes to & from
Marmaris May through October.
Use your chance to visit two
countries on one holiday!
Both the city and the island of
Rhodes are served by Diagoras
International Airport, situated
14 km south west of the city. It
is connected to all other major
